All the Way to the Top of Google

Find out how a small business made it to the top in Google. Searching is still the number-one activity on the Web (that is searching - not shopping). And if you're not doing anything to be seen in Google's top twenty listing, your online business won't probably see the light of day because chances are your customers will go elsewhere (most likely to your competitors who appear in the top twenty).

According to Hitwise Pty Ltd (Nov 2004), a premier online measurement company, an astounding 68% of users who search on the web use Google, 16% use Yahoo AU & NZ and the rest use Ninemsn and other less popular search engines. The numbers are clear. To get any kind of impact on your online business, you need to improve your ranking in Google.

Steven Brown, Managing Director of leading home cinema and digital imaging specialists, Australian Interactive Multimedia Pty Ltd, is no stranger (well, not anymore) to Google's coveted number one ranking in a number of keywords. He understands why his business needs to be in front of customers when they are "searching" for his products online.

Brown's growing business relies on incoming sales queries mostly from their website, www.ausmedia.com.au. However, "this is still a person-to-person business and our customers are happy because they not only get good prices, they also enjoy great service. And the best part is, they found us on the Internet easily", says Brown.

Brown has taken the view that instead of spending large sums on big colour advertisements in printed telephone directories, which had proven to be ineffective for their business, they would use the money saved to promote their website and improve their content.

"Melbourne IT (Domainz parent company) approached me with a low cost way to achieve an improvement in our rankings in the major search engines, Google in particular. The cost involved was minor compared to other forms of promotion so I thought, let's give it a go. Being a public company, I knew they wouldn't be offering products they couldn't deliver on. They took the time to figure out what the best keywords would be and came up with a plan and it worked! We got results faster than I had expected. Our site came from a low ranking that made it very hard to gain hits - several pages into the listings - into the top five, even number one against some of the giants in our field!"

Search engine marketing is now the main source of sales for the company and Brown is enthusiastic about the company's growth since their Google rankings in a number of keywords shot to the top in November last year. ?With projected sales up 15%, this should be our best year ever.
