Keep Spam Out |
Some useful tips to prevent SPAM or
reduce the number of unwanted emails sent to your inbox.
1) Public Websites
If you can, try not to show your email address on public
websites such as for example newsgroups, chat-rooms etc.
this is mainly due to the fact that spammers use these types
of directories and websites to harvest or extract email
addresses.
Alternatively you may choose to disguise your email address
in a way that a person could get your address, but not an
email-harvesting software. For example
service@domainz.net.nz would be service – at – domainz –
dot – net – dot - nz
2) Privacy and Terms of Service
Whenever you submit to a newsletter on a website, take the
time to check the privacy policy and terms of service, you
may find that the company that provides the newsletter
reserves the right to ‘re-sell’ your email address and
contact details for marketing purposes, in exchange for a
free newsletter.
3) Contact forms
Whenever you fill in a form to subscribe to any newsletter
make sure you read and understand the form, especially
ensure that you ‘untick’ any pre-selected boxes that may
authorize partner sites to send you information by email.
4) Multiple email addresses
You may want to consider using two email addresses, one for
personal messages or for business related communication, and
one for newsgroups and newsletters.
5) A unique email address
Try to use a “unique” email address. A technique used by
spammers, is to look at all the most commons name
combinations of large ISP emails, therefore a name as common
as
john.smith@xtra.co.nz may get more spam emails than
a unique name like
J0hn_77smith@xtra.co.nz
Obviously , there is a downside - it's harder to remember an
unusual email address. A more user-friendly option is to
have your own email address based on your domain name, such
as johnsemail@johnsmith.co.nz
